Essay #1 Topic Reflection

One of the more pressing problems within our cities’ limelight’s has been poverty.  From the homeless block on West 72nd in NYC to the 101 Freeway homeless encampment in LA I think we all are trying our darnedest to ignore this rising issue. I want to understand why homelessness is climbing and climbing (though I can sure make some fairly good guesses) and more pressingly, why we rush to ignore it and why, for such a simple concept as taking care of those less fortunate, we rush to condemn and to criticize. In other words the psychology of helping those less fortunate and what we can do to solve such a problem for our trajectory seems only towards an increase and not an eradication of homelessness. I have been deeply passionate about this issue for I always value a human being based on their present needs and not their past mistakes. However because of this point of view, I’ve gotten into tense arguments with unlike minded individuals that condemn me for giving a dollar to someone who asked because they cannot trust said individual to use that money with good faith. So like Scooby Do, I want to chase after the real culprit and find out why we all are so quick to point fingers instead of lending a hand and what others think about this problem. I think this is incredibly important for we are neglecting those around us and I think that says a lot about America and its culture.

I think this is a very important topic to speak about. I love how you said how we try to ignore the issue because it is very true. I went to Philly last weekend and seeing the significant amount of homelessness was extremely saddening. As a New Yorker, I always witness the effects of poverty and it's sad but you're right I usually just ignore it. However, when you go to another city thinking that the effects are not as bad and then you realized they're worse, it really makes you think. I can't wait to see how you execute this topic and bring it into light with your writing.

First of all, Andrey, you choose a very good topic to write about your first essay. You can find some good articles that will definitely help you to write a well-developed essay. Also, it is a very great problem in our New York state. People are losing their jobs, homes for this pandemic situation. More and more people are losing their houses. You can also talk about our current situation. I am very interested to read your essay. Best of luck!

This is something that is absolutely being neglected at its root. I myself have been recently unsettled by the way NYC, officials and patrons, are handling the skyrocketing number of displaced individuals since the COVID-19 crisis began. We do need to change the trajectory and I can't wait to read your analysis of the pieces you find on this topic.

Hi Andrey, I enjoyed reading your reflection, and I think you chose a heart-breaking topic that faces many New Yorkers today. I relate to you about the constant challenge you face when giving back to homeless people on the train because I, myself, have been looked at for doing so. To sum up, I think this is an interesting topic and I wish you luck in writing your Source-Based Essay!!!!

This is truly a pressing issue and one that has continuously been tried to solve. However, as poverty rates increase, it really would be interesting to uncover the underlying causes of why people have such a hard time escaping their cycle of poverty. As you mentioned, I think it also does speak volumes about America's culture and how we may take "minding our own business" to a negative extreme.

This social issue is a great choice to spread awareness through analyzing the different literary works that pertain to this subject. This is also something we unfortunately witness here in New York City everyday. You make a valid point when saying many people choose to ignore this even when it deals with the value of human lives.

This is a social topic that deserves attention, we can see a very large number of homeless people in prosperous areas of New York, and although the government has been trying to address this issue, there are still many people living in poverty and we need to address the root causes of the problem!
