Source Based Essay – Topic Reflection

The world today is extreamly complicated and the society we live in has a lot of social issues that all relate to each other in one way or another, and should all be adressed by governments so action can be taken. There are many issues worth discussing in society today; homlessness, poverty, climate change, gun control, domestic violence, etc. However there is one issue that isnt getting as much attention and that is suicide. The annual U.S. suicide rate has increased 24% between 1999 and 2014, the highest rate recorded in 28 years.  Not to mention that organizations such as the World Health Assosiation go as far as to run statistics on how many people with approximately die from suicide yearly. According to them 1.54 million people will die in 2020 due to suicide. The question we have left to answer is why. I think this is worth exploring, it has always bothered me the amount of people (especially teenagers) that either fall into depression or commit suicide because of pressures from multiple factors. Kids should not be killing themselves, this issue is one of just as much importance as gun violence and may be a direct link. School shooting have been increasing at an alarming rate as well ever since Colombine, people are focusing on the guns. But instead they should be focusing on the kids, what could be making a teenager think okay im going to go shoot up a school and then take my own life. No one should be thinking like that, I believe it is important to find the source of this. Whether it be social media, school, or otherwise, this issue should be explored so that whether or not our government puts limits on guns kids wont even think about using them to kill others. This is what I intend to epxlore within my essay. To analyze 4 different sources on this topic to try and find a common ground between them in which a solution might be hidden.

I agree suicide is a problem that needs to be addressed. I think Individuals probably feel a lot of heavy expectations from their surroundings which causes a lot of stress and anxiety about the future. They shouldn't feel like that and that they shouldn't be afraid to open up and ask others for help.

I also believe this is a social issue that should be addressed more to the public. The different complications that people go through should not be left for them to face on their own. Spreading awareness of this problem can help save the lives of many others who may be dealing with similar dilemmas in their lives.

Suicide is definitely something that should be discussed more in the public realm, along with the opioid crisis. I feel like people are falling into despair over an economy that is leaving many of us living paycheck and paycheck. We also live in a society that is becoming increasingly dependent on technology, removing person to person interaction in many aspects of our life. We need to address the increased isolation that pervades our society and remove the stigma around discussing mental health.

I think people are just too afraid to open up or don't have the money for therapy and that leads to them killing themselves. Many factors can lead them to not open up and that can be how they are raised by their parents or taught by other people. I believe we should discover and eliminate the root issue of what causes a person to think of suicide as an option.

As a person coming from an Asian background, mental health is extremely sensitive that is oftentimes never talked about. In special circumstances where mental health is talked about, it is usually brought up in a negative light. Since the Asian community placed such a taboo on this topic, we have seen countries like South Korea and Japan facing this problem. I think it's important to educate people about mental health so we can eliminate the negative stereotypes people may have on the topic.
