Essay #1 Topic Reflection

Posted by Haseeb Chaudhury on

The contemporary education system is a social issue that interests me. The reason why this interests me is that there are a lot of things wrong with the current education system and I want to understand ways in how to improve this system so that it allows students to be more flexible and not be left behind. The issues surrounding the education system is that It does not allow specific students to live up to their full potential. Another prominent issue with the system is that it teaches kids that grades are the most important thing and not the learning process behind it. Furthermore, it focuses more on the memorization aspect of learning rather than teaching students how to understand and apply themselves. Also, the system believes the grades of a student determines their intelligence and creativity which is false. Another problem with the system is that some students do not learn properly in a classroom as well as having a lot of homework which creates stress for the students. I believe the solution to improving the education system is to focus more on how the students learn rather than trying to teach every student the same method because every student learns and adapts to material differently. Another improvement would be to focus less on grades and more on the learning process of trying to get students to understand concepts and applying themselves. Furthermore, parental involvement can be another factor in a child’s education since a parent not caring about their child’s education can affect their child negatively. I want to know about more solutions on how to improve the current education system.

Source Based Essay – Topic Reflection

The world today is extreamly complicated and the society we live in has a lot of social issues that all relate to each other in one way or another, and should all be adressed by governments so action can be taken. There are many issues worth discussing in society today; homlessness, poverty, climate change, gun control, domestic violence, etc. However there is one issue that isnt getting as much attention and that is suicide. The annual U.S. suicide rate has increased 24% between 1999 and 2014, the highest rate recorded in 28 years.  Not to mention that organizations such as the World Health Assosiation go as far as to run statistics on how many people with approximately die from suicide yearly. According to them 1.54 million people will die in 2020 due to suicide. The question we have left to answer is why. I think this is worth exploring, it has always bothered me the amount of people (especially teenagers) that either fall into depression or commit suicide because of pressures from multiple factors. Kids should not be killing themselves, this issue is one of just as much importance as gun violence and may be a direct link. School shooting have been increasing at an alarming rate as well ever since Colombine, people are focusing on the guns. But instead they should be focusing on the kids, what could be making a teenager think okay im going to go shoot up a school and then take my own life. No one should be thinking like that, I believe it is important to find the source of this. Whether it be social media, school, or otherwise, this issue should be explored so that whether or not our government puts limits on guns kids wont even think about using them to kill others. This is what I intend to epxlore within my essay. To analyze 4 different sources on this topic to try and find a common ground between them in which a solution might be hidden.

Source Based Essay – Topic Reflection: Domestic Violence

Posted by Jiajie Liang on

Every family is an important element of a society, but violence in the family is a hazardous destabilizing factor in society. Actually, in the early history of the United States, when court rulings essentially upheld a husband’s right to beat his wife, men were at the top of the family hierarchy. In spite of the fact that there were decisions that a spouse ought not beat his better half, aggressive behavior at home was constantly viewed as a private family matter and the courts ought not get included. Then the growth of the feminist movement caused more attention to be paid to the issue of domestic violence, which led to changes in the law on domestic violence. Until 1994 that Congress passed “the Violence Against Women Act”, which was the first time the U.S. federal government implemented a comprehensive law to address domestic violence, it requiring states to honor protection orders issued by other state courts, and allowing victims to file lawsuits in federal court. According to an expert, “Domestic violence includes physical and mental injuries as well as forms of sexual abuse. In the case of physical injury, the victim suffers minor injuries or is killed in serious cases. In the case of psychological injuries, the victim is verbally abused and harassed, isolated from family and friends, or loses his or her financial resources. In the case of sexual abuse, the victim is often forced to have sexual relations with the other party”. Most acts of violence have a malicious intent. If many people use domestic violence as an excuse to intentionally harm another person, then this is a very serious and intentional crime. Firstly, domestic violence seriously harms citizens’ right to health and life; secondly, it also harms victims’ psychological health and may lead to a series of tragedies such as mental disorders, self-inflicted suicides, and violence. I believe that domestic violence places an enormous burden on the harmony and stability of society, and to some extent even impedes the building of a civilized society and a society governed by the rule of law.

Essay #1 Topic Reflection: America’s Wealth Gap

Posted by Jaden Fabro on

America’s wealth gap has come to the point where the few richest Americans have more wealth than millions at the bottom. The main cause seems to be based on an individual’s income, which is highly dependent on their education and demographic. It is widely known that people who have a college degree are more likely to earn more than those with only a high school diploma. However, the ability to even receive this education in the first place will also depend on that individual’s demographic. People of color have a harder time moving up the socioeconomic ladder compared to their white counterparts due to the inherent racism in many institutions. Similarly, women continuously earn less than their male counterparts due to different stigmas surrounding which jobs men and women should pursue. This, among many other factors, contributes to the disparity of wealth in America.

This social issue intrigued me because of the different mindsets I have noticed that occur as a result of which social class you belong to. Specifically, I had seen the phrase “money can’t buy you happiness” and my immediate thought was ‘I wish I was privileged enough to believe that’. Upon reflecting on my initial reaction, I realized that this thought was a product of my socioeconomic status.

Through writing this paper, I want to understand the specific ways the rich become richer and the poor become poorer. I have a vague idea of how both are happening, but I would like to uncover what policies and loopholes have been set that allow this. I want to know who has the power to make these policies, how they received that power, and why people who are being negatively affected by these policies let that person in power stay. I would also like to know the options that people at the bottom of this socioeconomic ladder have to try to move up, if they even have any at all.
