Essay #3 Reflection

Posted by Jiajie Liang on

Using two genres to convey my main idea can better convey the different target audiences and the different effects that I want to convey. In the traditional essay, an introduction is needed to introduce the seriousness of the danger of school bullying, and then we need to use research data and evidence to support the argument in order to draw a conclusion. The traditional essay does improve writing and is informative. In order to write an article that is closer to the public eye, we need to learn how to be creative and use rhetorical strategies.

As for the choice of genre, I chose through different audiences. Firstly, I chose to use the video format of the advertisement, in which all the characters are students. I used the before and after comparison of students being bullied in order to convey the negative consequences of bullying more directly to students. The advertisement can attract more students to pay attention to the bullying around them and get some positive energy from the advertisement in order to change students’ negative thoughts. Unlike a traditional paper, a poster does not have a large text narrative, but it can be used to explain the main idea in the simplest possible way. The target audience for the poster genre is parents and educators. The responsibilities of parents and educators are also a factor in school bullying. Therefore, the poster can communicate the main idea of “take action” to my target audience and attract more parents and educators to pay attention to bullying and take action to stop it.

For the first advertisement, I used pathos rhetoric about how horrible school bullying is for the victims, and told more students to stop bullying. Encourage more students to help when they see bullying and not to be afraid of the threat of others, the law will protect us. For the second genre, I chose a logical rhetorical strategy to explain school bullying, and call on parents to pay attention to their children’s education. Furthermore, educators to pay close attention to students’ changes in school, and help students to change their deficiencies and shortcomings, pass on more positive energy to students.

Essay #3 Audience Strategy

Posted by Jiajie Liang on

In my discussion of the topic of school bullying, my intended audience is educators, as well as students and parents. Students are the main group that suffer the most from school bullying. In addition, there are educators and parents who are the “keys” to saving students from going astray and providing them with better protection and help.

I would like to educate my audience more about the dangers of school bullying and the effects of school bullying on society. To warn more students to stay away from school bullying and to remind students that serious school bullying may be a criminal offense. Also communicate to educators and parents the reality of bullying cases, observe changes in their children more closely, improve their own educational attitudes, and learn solutions to prevent school bullying.

The first way I wanted to explain my topic was to use the poster style, looking for relatively exaggerated images that would convey a cautionary but not serious style. In addition, I would like to show how negative the effects of school violence can be with some graphic illustrations of real cases or investigative reports, as well as some testimonies of victims who have been injured and how it happened. In this way, we can get parents to value the education and protection of their children. It also appears more authentic and conveys a rhetorical strategy of ethos. These posters can be posted in all corners of the community to draw attention to social issues and draw attention to them.

The next step is to exhibit the dangers of school bullying in the form of advertisements. Advertisements can better promote the negative effects of school bullying. A rhetorical strategy of pathos is used to show how the victim is experiencing the bullying. Advertisements can also be used to better promote effective responses to prevent bullying. Demonstrating some legal knowledge about school bullying and a professional perspective on prevention and protection is also a solution. We can see these advertisements on our cell phones, computers, or TV. Social networking is not only convenient, but it is also easier to be seen and then to pay attention to cases related to school bullying. Regardless of the genre of the posters or advertisements, I hope to convey a message of staying away from school bullying or solving the problem of preventing school bullying, and I hope that this problem can be reduced in society and a sound education system can be found to prevent school bullying.

Essay #3: Potential Genres Proposal

Posted by Jiajie Liang on

In my essay #2, the topic I explored was school bullying. So I wanted to use the genre of posters to explain my topic. Since the audience of my research paper is people working as educators and parents students, I want to use poster to show my audience about the dangers of school bullying and the effects of school bullying on society. I want to use the rhetoric of warning or caution to show that school bullying is not as easy to solve as we think, nor is it so simple to prevent school bullying. I would like to use many real cases or survey reports to show how negative school violence is, so that it seems more realistic. In addition, I can talk about several effective measures to protect students from school bullying, which can be better illustrated in the form of pictures and articles to better illustrate the prevention methods. Put some proof of the victim’s injuries on the poster and make elaboration on how the person in the picture was injured. This is the only way to get parents to focus on the education and protection of their children.

Another genre is to exhibit the dangers of school bullying in the form of advertisements. Advertisements can visually better promote the resistance to school bullying. Also, school bullying is a social problem. The form of advertisement can give more parents and students legal knowledge about campus bullying, and protecting themselves with a professional perspective is also a measure to prevent campus bullying.

No matter it is in the form of posters or advertisements, I hope to convey the theme of staying away from school bullying or solving the problem of preventing school bullying. Furthermore, I hope that school bullying problem can be reduced in the society and a perfect education system can be found to prevent school bullying.

Essay #2 reflection

The subject of this article on school bullying is something that I feel is imperative to examine and ponder in the community. I am expounding on the essay of school bullying in light of the fact that I need to make more students, teachers, and educational professionals mindful of the violence around them. To make them more mindful of the instances of school viciousness is the the purpose of my writing on this topic. Additionally, to learn procedures in managing instances of school viciousness in the present society to keep more school brutality from creating.

Most of the revisions in this improved essay were made through suggestions from my classmates and myself after reading other students’ essays. After perusing other students’ essays, I realized that there was a serious problem with my essay. I was basically using information to summarize my arguments. I did not think that I had explained the main idea of each paragraph and simply used the information that I found to explain it, I found that I was missing my own thoughts. This is the problem that I realized in this essay. The best solution to this problem would be to add more of your own thoughts to the paragraphs and then combine the information you found with your own thoughts, which might look a little better. Also, as my classmate suggested, I think I should have more evidence to prove my point. In addition, I think my vocabulary is too simple, and my grammar and tenses are very weak, which may require a lot of cumulative learning in my daily life.

Secondly, my intended audience is primarily students, followed by teachers, educators, and then parents. Students are advised to maintain a good attitude towards learning, to have proper respect in their friendships, and not to ignore bullying even if a friend is around. Helping educators realize the seriousness of bullying in schools and establishing a positive educational environment is something that educators must manage. Finally, parents are reminded that the home environment is also something that needs to be managed for education. This is the only way to effectively reduce school violence.

I feel that writing a research paper has really taught me a lot of things, writing skills, techniques, and finding effective research materials have improved a lot. Also, I was able to learn a lot about cases, or the law, while writing the research paper. Furthermore, I can  learn more about social impact from my writing papers.

Essay #2 Report on Research in Progress

Posted by Jiajie Liang on

The sources that I have gathered are found from various sites, where the main points are primarily gotten from scholarly papers composed by clinical specialists, while the others are informed from some reliable educational websites. These articles have believability as they are completely talked about from verifiable cases, or expert viewpoints.

The first source, “What Are the Best Ways to Prevent Bullying in Schools? A new study identifies the most effective approaches to bullying prevention” by Diana Divecha , it’s an educational journal type story published in October 2019. The author is a medical doctor and studies child psychology, so the article is highly credible. The article’s research tests two strategies that are most effective in preventing bullying: establishing a positive school climate and advancing social and emotional learning. The article explains the feasibility of these two strategies, and it  shows the research and results, in addition to suggesting the influence of family factors on school bullying. This article supports my point of view and helps me to prove some of my arguments.

One of my primary bachelor’s thesis materials was a related professional research paper I found on a medical dissertation website, “Bullying, Psychosocial Adjustment, and Academic Performance in Elementary School ” by Gwen M. Glew, MD; Ming-Yu Fan, PhD; Wayne Katon, MD; Frederick P. Rivara, MD; Mary A. Kernic, PhD, MPH. This was published in 2005. The paper, which was researched by several M.D.’s so it is highly credible. It investigated what factors are associated with school bullying including student achievement, school attendance, statistical data including mean, standard deviation and frequency of demographic variables, and psychosocial variables. The survey showed that the mean achievement scores of groups involved in bullying in school and psychosocial outcomes were lower than those of bystanders. Studies have shown that students with character deficits or extreme insecurity are more likely to engage in bullying. The purpose of the PhDs investigating and studying this is to demonstrate from the data that the role of the bully and the victim in school violence is often not what it appears to be. Many teachers may decide that the student must not do anything to hurt others because of the student’s good grades. In addressing school violence, it is important to find enough evidence before dealing with the bad qualities of the student. In my opinion, this essay brings a different perspective to the various factors of school bullying.

Another article I found on People’s University’s educational website is a “Definition of Bullying” which is an objective article about the types of bullying, which are cyber bullying, physical bullying, emotional bullying, sexual bullying, verbal bullying and higher education bullying. Among the laws, national anti-bullying laws exist in every state, although there are fewer federal laws on school bullying in the United States. Second, the majority of statistically reported bullying occurs in school hallways, stairways, or classrooms.Students may also be bullied because of their appearance, race, gender, or religion. In fact, students who experience bullying are more likely to suffer from depression as it leads to lower self-esteem. This article helped me to better articulate my point of view and gave me a reliable point of information for my article.

Another source I discovered was an article distributed in the New York Times in 2011 called “Two Students Plead Guilty in Bullying of Teenager” by Erik Eckholm, which is an exemplary instance of school tormenting. This harassing case occurred in South Hadley, Massachusetts, where six students tormented and even  sexually assaulted  a girl named Phoebe Prince, prompting the girl suicide in January 2010. Two of the students, Sean Mulveyhill and Kayla Narey, were seriously charged with violating Prince’s civil rights and causing real damage, while three others deal with similar to those for youth offenses. The last student, Austin Renaud, was charged with rape. This case recounts the account of how destructive school bullying can be. In the law, the bullying student is also punished by the law.

In the profile “Beyond the Bullies: Bystanders and Instigators Enable Aggression” by Denise Wolk, published in July 2010, the article presents the views of the author of the case “Two Students Plead Guilty in Bullying of Teenager”. The article obviously communicates the connection between the bystander, the agitator, and the abuser. Furthermore, Denise suggests thatThe Phoebe Prince case points out the importance to schools of providing training and support for both school personnel and students to counter bullying and harassment both within and outside of the school. Schools have an ethical and legal responsibility to create safe learning environments.“ The case of Phoebe Prince violated the Civil Rights Act and the Education Amendment,  so they have an obligation to assume liability for their actions.  This article was very helpful in explaining the solution to the “Two Students Plead Guilty in Bullying of Teenager” case and the prevention of bullying inside and outside of schools. The ideas in this article fit well with my arguments, so I think it’s a great resource.

ESSAY #2 RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Posted by Jiajie Liang on

Question: What kind of laws are legally relevant to school bullying? And what are the effects of school bullying? Influence in schools or in the community?

The name of the publication: American Medical Association

Essay Model: “Bullying, Psychosocial Adjustment, and Academic Performance in Elementary School” by Gwen M. Glew, MD; Ming-Yu Fan, PhD; Wayne Katon, MD; Frederick P. Rivara, MD; Mary A. Kernic, PhD, MPH.

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/article-abstract/486162

The motivation behind why the research point on school bullying interests me is that it is a pervasive issue that is hidden in our general society. I am currently living on campus, so I can identify with the awful idea of school bullying. School bullying harms the victim physically, it additionally harms the mental agony that an individual feels. There are numerous variables that lead to school bullying, for example, looks, family background, race, or unimportant clashes that lead to school bullying all exist. In the student questionnaires, it is evident that in experiencing school bullying, the parents will not know anything about the bullying that happens to the student at school. In other words, students are overwhelmingly afraid to tell those around them about their bullying, and they are psychologically afraid to confront school bullying and create a protective state for themselves. The next thing is the fear of the bully inflicting the bullying on them. In addition, there is a kind of bystander role in school bullying, bystanders do not report or stop the bullying from happening because they are afraid of being implicated. Worse yet, those who experience school bullying over time will experience depression, doubt themselves, and even rise to suicide because of the psychological devastation.

Additionally, I found from the information I looked through that school bullying affects scholastics. As indicated by the information study report it was reasoned that kids who were bullying would play truant to avoid the bullying.” A study of 204 Midwestern American middle and high school students found that 90% said they had a drop in grades, an increase in anxiety, and a loss of friends or social life as a result of bullying.” In the United States, there are relatively few federal laws regarding school bullying. But all fifty states in the U.S. have anti-bullying laws, and they can document and investigate cases of bullying in schools. Furthermore, they can take action to stop the bullying. School bullying has even increased the rate of carrying guns to school, fighting, smoking, plagiarism, and a host of other social hazards. In summary, the sources of information on school bullying are largely based on the results of the bullying questionnaires derived from the academic and psychological harms that school bullying brings, not only to the school, but also to society.

The primary subject of my article is understudies who have encountered school bullying at school. I think more educators, understudies, and guardians will focus on the threats of school bullying.  Besides caution guardians that the manner in which they instruct and care needs to change and propose that the school education system be more exacting. More educators need to go to keep up education atmosphere to diminish the threat of school bullying.

Essay #2-Research Topic Reflection

Posted by Jiajie Liang on

The topic of my research is “How is school bullying treated legally, and what are the social impacts of school bullying? “I was asked to choose this question on campus bullying because I am in my student years. There are many real cases of campus bullying around me and I have witnessed the horrors of it first hand. Through this research question, I want to learn more about the laws that exist regarding campus bullying. Therefore, more students will learn about the laws regarding school violence so that they can accurately use the legal tools to protect themselves. In the case of school bullying, it is divided into several situations. The first is when the bully has developed a habit of bullying the weaker students. The second scenario is the bullied has done or said something bad to the bully. The other type of school bullying is when the bully has bullied someone else without their awareness. But no matter what the situation is the bully needs to pay the appropriate punishment. So the question I ask is to point out what legal responsibility the bully should have in terms of the law. Just because they are minors, they should not get away with the punishment they deserve. Also as the bully and the bullied get out of school and into society, what kind of impact their school bullying has on their future development and growth. This will warn the bully that fists won’t solve any problems and calm down to think about the negative impact school violence will have on their future life.

Through writing we can learn about the different thoughts and ideas of each person and different approaches and views towards a certain matter. The topic of a piece of writing can be explored to the smallest issues within the topic, then telling others about your understanding of the topic so that they can understand the purpose and idea behind the writing is what I believe is necessary for a good piece of writing. Not only that, rhetorical analysis is the best factor that can improve the understanding of the essay. Secondly, finding credible information can improve the accuracy of the essay. After going through the first time of writing, I found out that it is not as simple as I thought it would be, it needs to find credible enough sources to find out its purpose from the data. And it needs clear positions and evidence to prove its arguments. However, I didn’t do well in this area. I didn’t find enough evidence to prove its theme in my first essay. And my grasp of grammar and tenses was inadequate, which was a constant concern. But with my professor’s revisions and suggestions, I learned how to write correctly about the position of the essay, and the genre of the essay, to explain specifically why they were there. All of this helped me with my writing and quickly helped me understand the main message and focus of the essay.

And the fact that nearly three million children in the U.S. have requested protection from the government, with a variety of different programs available. “He Was The Last Person I Want To Be Stuck With,” a magazine story about a woman who was with her abusive partner during the COVID-19 epidemic. After the girl found out that the guy was cheating on her, he started to be violent, such as grabbing her hair, holding her down and beating her up. This is a very common occurrence of domestic violence, which not only hurts the girl’s rights but also undermines social norms of behavior. During the COVID-19, social isolation due to quarantine at home means that domestic violence became increasingly ‘aggressive’. Abusers are even more rampant due to the financial and emotional pressures of life, prompting them to lash out at their partners in increasingly extreme ways. So victims can send out distress signals to close friends and family members to prevent further harm from occurring.

Social media post:

Domestic violence is when someone uses domestic abuse to hurt a family member or someone in a close relationship, It comes in many forms of violence, such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse and neglect. Also, there are 6 types of family violence: Intimate partner violence, child abuse and neglect, elder abuse, violence based on so-called “honour”, forced marriage, female genital mutilation. Furthermore, domestic violence has hurt the physical and mental health of the victims and even the safety of life; secondly, it’s a serious injury to the mental health of the victims, more likely to lead to mental disorder, overwhelmed, self-inflicted suicide, running away from home, violence and a series of tragedies. The problem of domestic violence is a great burden to the whole society and even to the harmony and stability of the country.

Source Based Essay – Topic Reflection: Domestic Violence

Posted by Jiajie Liang on

Every family is an important element of a society, but violence in the family is a hazardous destabilizing factor in society. Actually, in the early history of the United States, when court rulings essentially upheld a husband’s right to beat his wife, men were at the top of the family hierarchy. In spite of the fact that there were decisions that a spouse ought not beat his better half, aggressive behavior at home was constantly viewed as a private family matter and the courts ought not get included. Then the growth of the feminist movement caused more attention to be paid to the issue of domestic violence, which led to changes in the law on domestic violence. Until 1994 that Congress passed “the Violence Against Women Act”, which was the first time the U.S. federal government implemented a comprehensive law to address domestic violence, it requiring states to honor protection orders issued by other state courts, and allowing victims to file lawsuits in federal court. According to an expert, “Domestic violence includes physical and mental injuries as well as forms of sexual abuse. In the case of physical injury, the victim suffers minor injuries or is killed in serious cases. In the case of psychological injuries, the victim is verbally abused and harassed, isolated from family and friends, or loses his or her financial resources. In the case of sexual abuse, the victim is often forced to have sexual relations with the other party”. Most acts of violence have a malicious intent. If many people use domestic violence as an excuse to intentionally harm another person, then this is a very serious and intentional crime. Firstly, domestic violence seriously harms citizens’ right to health and life; secondly, it also harms victims’ psychological health and may lead to a series of tragedies such as mental disorders, self-inflicted suicides, and violence. I believe that domestic violence places an enormous burden on the harmony and stability of society, and to some extent even impedes the building of a civilized society and a society governed by the rule of law.
