ESSAY #1 TOPIC REFLECTION

A social issue that interests me is the issue of how the Covid-19 is allowing anti-Asian racism to grow. The issue of discrimination against Asians is getting more and more fierce starting from just words to the potential of actually killing a person. This issue interests me a lot because it shows a lot more of what human nature and the intellect of a lot of people out there are like. Even politicians are making and convincing people that Asian people are bad for their areas. Many of these acts and voices can be seen on the internet, through social media, and many more other sources for everyone else to see which can only increase the number of racist attacks on Asians. The attacks can range from beatings, threats, racist abuse, discrimination, and much more. I can only assume people think Asians everywhere had planned this or carries the virus the second it came out. People are using the pandemic as an excuse to discriminate against people and it’s only going to spread. The government has to make people realize that this isn’t right, they have to change the way people think otherwise it will get worse and worse. The government has not taken enough action to stop this type of hate but instead fueled it with encouragement through their speech or social media posts. I personally want to know whether or not those government officials that support anti-Asian are going to continue because as long as such people are in some sort of power they will influence other people. I also want to know if the government is going to take some sort of action to stop this discrimination because if it continues this issue will get big enough to the point where violent protests similar to black lives matter will appear. People’s lives could get lost from this in fact people’s lives are already being lost from this so when will it stop.

    Hey Richard I totally understand the issue because I have seen it happen in front of me. It is unbelievable to see how many people fell for the news. It shows us how our world works, which is about judging and believing any news that gets viral. I also want to see what the government will do about this because they have a habit of staying quiet when their voices are needed.

    I've heard stories from friends where they get discriminated against based on assumption, based on the fact that they originate from a certain ethnicity so they must be carrying the virus. It's sad to hear how people can easily be placed in a category that makes them vulnerable to discrimination, especially when it hasn't just resulted to dirty looks and judgement, but also violence and mistreatment.

    Hi Richard, I think this topic is totally relevant and great to research on! Its new and ongoing and Its also something that I as well as many others have been noticing. I remember when Covid-19 was at its peak back in March and I've seen videos go viral about racism against Asians. Some of my classmates even made some rude remarks about this as well. I think this topic that you choose will be good to learn more about.

    I like how you chose racism as your topic reflection. While you may not be implying it, you're bringing a topic that isn't really discussed in today's media, which is racism between other races other than African American's and Caucasians. Not only this, but the topic you chose is also extremely relevant in today's time, especially in times like this.

    This social issue is so current, and even now, with the political elections, I'm sure you will have a lot of things to write about with all the events happening right now. It's sad that the most important figure in this country is the one who repeatedly blames Asians for what is happening right now. I'm sure you'll do a good job. Good luck!
