Class Introduction

Name: Marcela Velecela

Major: Economics

Preferred Gender Pronouns: She/Her

After reading over the syllabus, one thing I am most excited about is learning how to express my thoughts and feelings through carefully wrought language. I am not that good at thoroughly expressing my thoughts on paper and is one of the reasons why I don’t enjoy writing much. I’m always left with this feeling like something in my writing is missing.  That being said, I am also nervous about the amount of writing we will be doing this semester. It’s a challenge I am looking forward to in order to improve as a writer.

The qualities of good writing involve a process of brainstorming for ideas, making multiple drafts, and receiving feedback on your work. In order to be a good writer, one must do their part in researching thoroughly on their chosen subject. For me, research is the biggest part of writing because it’s important to understand what you’re writing about and create or increase public awareness on it. It is important to write well because by doing so you can communicate with the audience better. It will not only benefit your audience but also you in your career and everyday life.

The easiest part about writing, for me, is the part involving research. I enjoy researching about a topic that interests me, especially if it’s something new to me. The hardest part about writing is writing about a topic that I have no connection to. At times, it’s even hard to find a bit of motivation to begin writing and that’s where procrastination starts to hit me. I need to work on learning how to write about a variety of topics, especially on those I may not enjoy so much. I also need to work on self-reviewing. I’ve always found it easier to point out grammatical mistakes to others, but myself.

For my intended major, I believe there is quite a bit of writing I will be doing. Economists research, collect and analyze data so they may, later on, present their results in reports. The writing I will be doing will be analytical and descriptive. Career-wise, being an effective writer will help me with my communication skills and make better choices when advising a client about future projections.

Major: Management

Preferred Gender Pronouns: she/her/hers

I am super excited about the type of writing we will be doing However, I am nervous about it being virtual and also the all the type of genres that we will be using since English is not my first language.

I think good writing is mostly about the way the speaker visualizes a story. It is more about showing than telling. Being able to show a situation through writing rather than telling is what makes it better. It is also about the way the writer changes topics with smooth transitions.

when it comes to writing, I write down my thoughts on a paper in the simplest way possible. It does not include the best grammar or vocabularies because I right down what comes in my head if I am talking to someone.

The hardest part for me is to have smooth transitions and knowing to put out the unnecessary stuff. I also need to learn to use rhetorical strategies and use better vocabularies.

As a management student I need to learn more vocabulary for business and the working world in general. I am planning to change my major to civil engineering next year and a good writing class will help me understand elements in the engineering world.

Preferred Pronouns: She/Her

After reading the English 110 syllabus, one thing that I have become excited about is the well detailed writing assignments. Although essays can be very overwhelming I am excited to improve my ability to write and comprehend different forms of writing. Since this is my first year of college I am a little nervous about my ability to write at an acceptable college level. I feel that as when I write I am not as clear and straight forward as I want to be.

The qualities of good writing heavily depend on the form of writing and the audience in which you are communicating with. However I feel that writers should maintain an organized and clear format. Certain qualities that a writer should have are a clear word choice, and a connection with readers are all qualities of a good writer. To write well I feel that you need to have an understanding of multiple point of views and be able to convey and express ideas accordingly. It is important to write properly so that the readers can properly understand, if not readers will not be able to get the point.

The easiest part of writing for me is incorporating my opinions into my writings and making text to world connections. The things I still need to work on is structuring my ideas into my writing, I feel that I run on and my thoughts and ideas are all over the place. I want to be able to have a well structured essay.

In my intended major I feel like there will be a lot of writing, my major is Psychology. The only thing that comes to mind is writing reviews on patients about diagnosis and brief notes. I believe that my ability to be a good writer is important not only for my major, but for a long time career. I will need to assess patients and be able to properly write about what is occurring with patients. My writing ability will not only be apart of my career but my everyday tactics.

Introductory Essay

English 110: Freshman Composition 5BC2 [24980]

Instructor: Shamecca Harris

Ayesha Abdul-Fattaah

Preferred pronouns: She/her

Intended Major: Childhood Education

After reviewing the syllabus, I am looking forward to strengthening my essay writing. One thing I am nervous about is balancing the work from this course, along with my other courses.

When evaluating the quality of one’s writing, I notice if the writer got their point across using the least amount of words and repetition of words possible. I also pay attention to the flow of the writing and if the placement of ideas makes sense. If a piece of writing presents a new perspective that makes me think, I also consider that to be a good quality. In order to be a good writer, one has to be able to present ideas clearly and concisely. The ability to write well is necessary, as it allows one to portray abstract ideas to others concretely and in a way that makes sense. Being able to write well manifests understanding, critical thinking, and communication, which are fundamental to our roles here on Earth as human beings.

I believe I am good at brainstorming and researching a topic. Further, I am good at editing my writing. I need to work on giving myself enough time to properly write, as I often cram. While cramming, I find myself wanting to add more or coming up with new ideas, only to realize that I do not have the time to execute those ideas. I also have trouble asking for help when I need it. If I work on my time management and start to advocate for myself, that will be a step in the right direction.

As a teacher, I will need to know how to present written instructions so that my students comprehend them. I will also need to be able to manually communicate with parents or guardians of my students, as well as with colleagues and bosses. Writing is crucial in our education system and I want to educate my students optimally. If I did not write well, I would not be able to teach my students to write well.

My Introduction

Posted by Emily Sanchez on

Emily Sanchez

Intended major: Mechanical Engineering

Pronouns: She/Her

Due to the circumstances that have arisen, most of us have had to adjust to a new method of learning and with that, have been struggling to properly understand how to navigate everything. I’m not normally a strong writer, nor have I ever been thrilled to begin a new essay or a new book. Especially with the situation that has presented itself, it’s not going to be as simple as turning your head and asking the person beside you to assist you in wording a sentence correctly, therefore, my fear is that I will not be able to successfully meet the standards that a college essay has. However, I’m looking forward to reevaluating my previous way of thinking and being introduced to new forms of literature that will give me a new perspective.

It takes hours and hours for me to ever come close to finishing any type of writing, mainly because I struggle with creating the right combination of words that would give the reader a better understanding of what I’m trying to address. I find myself either repeating or rephrasing what I previously said, or not being able to come up with any more viable information that I can include to further explain myself. In spite of that, once I’m certain on how to further elaborate my point, it comes naturally, the sentence starts writing itself and before I know it, I’m done.

There are numerous standards that qualify you as a good writer. Some say that it’s all based upon your grammar or whether your writing flows or makes sense, others believe it’s about using the biggest and hardest words you can find. Although grammar and structure are important factors, what makes a good writer is being able to connect the audience to your writing and your passion. Once you appeal to their emotions and/or logic, you get them to truly understand the importance of what you’re writing. It is one of the many ways you can express what you’re feeling and bring light to your ideas.

Writing can be useful in any field, even mechanical engineering. Writing is the only way people create instructions, manuals, and even provide ideas for projects. You become a more useful employee if you know how to address certain matters clearly in your writing so that your fellow coworkers can understand you and your findings.

Writing Resistance – Fall 2020

English 110: Freshman Composition: Class Introduction

Name: Chao Hong

Intended Major: Computer Science

Preferred Pronouns: He/Him

After reading the syllabus I really like how the course allows us to be more informed of our own government. Though I am excited about deepening my understanding of social issues that occur today, I often struggle to decipher the message the author wants to leave behind in their writing.

The qualities in good writing I believe is to put the reader into the setting the author wants to depict in their minds, and in order to become a writer who could do that, one must obviously practice in order to succeed. Being able to write well is important because it is a way to permanently put the author’s beliefs and ideals visibly for others to see.

Whenever I write I find it fairly easy to use descriptive words or phrases in order to portray what I want the reader to “see”. I’m fairly good at putting what I feel effectively using words.

The hardest part of writing for me is staying focused on what I’m working on and not procrastinating and grammar isn’t really a strong point for me either. I need to work on making sure the things I write makes sense and that I’m using the best word(s) possible in order to help readers understand my main points.

While my major doesn’t necessarily have a lot of writing I still believe that writing is nonetheless useful in any career since you never know when you have to put your ideas in words. In addition, being a good writer is good for your career opportunities since you’re able to portray what kind of person you are and the goals you hope to achieve clearly.

Class Introduction – Richard Hsu

Posted by Richard on

Hi, my name is Richard Hsu and my intended major is architecture, my preferred pronouns are he/him.

After reviewing the syllabus I believe I am most excited about engaging in a collaborative writing process with others and just improve overall in my writing skills. I am however kind of nervous regarding this course in being able to explore and analyze different genres and rhetorical situations since I am just bad in recognizing such things in texts, perhaps it’s just because English isn’t my first language.

I think the qualities of good writing will include the use of various vocabularies but aren’t too complicated and appear often enough that people will need to literally use a dictionary to keep reading. Good writing also includes smooth transitions and the use of various rhetorical devices that have the ability to give off the feeling that the writer wants to convey to the readers. While I believe good writing should include all those mentioned before I also think that it should be very clear at the points it’s making across to anyone reading it. This is the most important part of what makes good writing because to me if it is not clear on its ideas than it is just a paper with tons of vocabulary with no meaning. To be able to write well is to be able to convey your thoughts and/or feelings to the readers. I can only guess that in order to be a good writer you would have to be a good reader.

The easiest part of writing for me is to simply write down my own thoughts and idea as if to have a conversation with another person on paper.

The hardest part of writing for me is to be able to use or identify different rhetorical strategies or to analyze tough writings with a lot of vocabulary that isn’t often used normally. I’ll definitely have to work on my vocabulary knowledge.

In my architecture major, I will probably have to write reports and descriptions of various projects to people. Being an effective writer while not extremely helpful I believe can help increase my communication skills, perhaps it will help convey my messages clearer and seem more professionally made.

Class Introduction- Hudibel Ovalles

Name: Hudibel Ovalles

Preferred Pronouns: She/Hers

Major: Psychology

After reading and analyzing the syllabus, I submerged into a deep ocean of feelings. One part of me couldn’t believe the idea that I was going to have the opportunity to expand my writing abilities and then being able to use it in other professional areas. But, the other side of me was anxious about the language barrier that exists for me. The fact that I came to this country two years ago makes me doubt a lot about myself and my abilities when it comes to writing in English. And even though, I’m able to understand and speak in English, there is still a barrier between what I want to say and how I expressed.

For me, a good writer should be passionate when it comes to express their ideas and thoughts. In order to be a good writer, you should be able to understand your audience and be concise with the words and the impact you want to create. Good writing skills open the doors of the world for you to write what you can’t say, and then shared with the world. When it comes to writing, I’m pretty good at analyzing the speaker, his purpose, and then connected to his audience. But as I said before, it is still hard for me to express exactly what I want to say and then used to my favor.

I’m not sure what type of genre I would be writing about, maybe research articles and a lot of essays. But, what I know is that being an effective writer would give me the chance to connect with people outside of everything I know, forcing them to see me for my passionate words and not for my race or nationality.

After reviewing the syllabus, I am most eager to develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing. This is because I believe they are very versatile and will prove to be useful no matter what I continue to study. Although I do understand that in order to achieve these strategies I will have to write a large amount, I’m anxious about the multiple page essays that we will have to submit. In high school, I became used to my teachers limiting my page count to two or three pages, so I always kept my writing concise. I hope that when I write these essays, I won’t sound redundant to fill the page count.

Good writing has a purpose and is delivered concisely and effectively. In order to achieve this result, practice is key. The more someone writes, the more they’ll become familiar with different techniques and writing styles that will improve their writing. It’s important to be a good writer because it’s one of the most used forms of communication. In everything we do as students and later as adults, we will have to communicate our thoughts, ideas, and feelings efficiently in school and the workplace, which being good writers will do for us.

The easiest part of writing for me is getting words down on a page. I may not know what exactly to write, but I almost always have some idea of what I’m trying to get at. I find that when I’m on my first draft, I work better with quantity over quality. Then once I have all my ideas down, I focus on the quality of my paper. Revising and editing on the other hand, is more difficult for me. I have a hard time determining how much I should cut out or expand on certain ideas from my original draft.

I plan on becoming an architect after college. In this field, I’ll be expected to write reports on different projects and possible proposals for new ones. By becoming an effective writer, I will be able to clearly express my ideas to my colleagues and coworkers. This will also allow us to have a coherent end goal and will make communication between us a lot easier. I believe this will result in successful projects that will then result in an increase in career opportunities.

Writing Resistant- Fall 2020

Posted by Aditya Sankar Das on

Hello, My name is Aditya Das. I am a freshman. My intended major is Biology. My preferred gender pronouns are he/his. Here I am attaching my picture:-

After reviewing the syllabus, I am excited about learning new vocabulary. Also, I am passionate about improving my writing skills and formats. There are so many new things to learn about Freshman composition such as tone, rhetorical question, mood, etc. How I positively present my opinion. Regarding this semester, due to the COVID situation, we all need to learn from online, and that makes me feel nervous. Sometimes I face difficulties writing a clear thesis statement. There are so many traits for good writing. First of all, ideas make up the content of the piece of writing. A well-organized piece of writing is not only clear, it’s presented in a way that is logical and aesthetically pleasing. I heard that there are so many traits for good writing. First of all, ideas make up the content of the piece of writing. A well-organized piece of writing is not only clear, it’s presented in a way that is logical and aesthetically pleasing. Finally, word choice can help to improve our message that helps the reader to better understand our reflection. To become a good writer, we must practice more and more; because practice makes us perfect. Furthermore, we all need to read a lot and write a lot then compare it with others. The most important thing to write well is a better imagination. Then translate your thoughts into words. So, when the readers read, they can also imagine your thoughts. The easiest part of my writing is an argumentative essay. I am good at it because it is easy to collect evidence and explain it so that it can support your claim. The hardest part is to find the tone and figurative languages. Sometimes I struggle with vocabulary words. I find it difficult to connect my thoughts with the main idea. I need to work with vocabulary words and learn somehow to connect my ideas with the main theme. In my major or career field, I will be expected to write in science friction. Being an effective writer will help me to become an essential member of my workplace. Also, it will help me to send professional emails to my colleagues and write about my research papers.
