Ayesha Abdul-Fattaah’s Audience Strategy

Posted by Ayesha Abdul-Fattaah on

My intended audiences are adolescents and adults. I plan on making a meme/political cartoon like visual aid as well as an advertisement to be shown on social media apps like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Thus, my intended audience need to be active partakers on social media apps. I also think some of my audience members need to be the type to follow political meme accounts. I want my audience to understand the root issues of homelessness, to feel compassion for people who experience homelessness in our communities, and think critically about how our world works and what one can do individually to better our world. I want my audience to recognize homelessness as an issue that can be attended to by individuals like you and me. I want my audience to care about this issue and hopefully influence others to care about this issue as well. The genres that I included above, meme/political cartoon and advertisement, are attractive and accessible to my audience as they will be found on social media. Most adolescents and adults that I know are active on social media. Since some members of my audience follow political meme accounts, I feel that they will enjoy a political meme/cartoon as that is the content one assumes is on an account like that. Advertisements, when made correctly, catches one’s eye and allows for information to be presented in a timely/condensed fashion. To engage my audience, I will use pathos to invoke feelings of, “I want to help people who are experiencing homelessness/someone who is less fortunate than I am”. I will also use logos to logically present the idea that capitalism ensures the issue of homelessness to remain constant. I want to make my visual aids somewhat witty or amusing to get attention, yet critical and serious at the same time as my topic is very important.

For my third essay I want to make sure the audience I will be targetting will have little to no misconceptions towards the information that is being provided. This way, the audience I want to target can take the information the way it is supposed to be taken in. Therefore, For my third essay I want to use ads/posters that can be seen when a person is scrolling through social media going to work, going to work on a public transportation system, or simply strolling through the streets of their city. I feel like this genre is very suitable for the type of essay I am trying to write because one of the main focuses I’m trying to achieve is to get rid of misconceptions that may lead to large consequences. The rhetorical strategies that I will use for my essay would be would mainly be pathos and logos. The reason why I will be using pathos is because since the audience I am targetting are mainly people that are going to stick around for a short while I want to make sure the information I am giving will give a lasting impression and the most effective way to do that is through pathos. In addition, I will also be using logos in my essay. Without logic and reason the audience may have some doubts and might not take the information that I am providing seriously. Overall, I want to make sure the audience that I am targetting will have no misconceptions and are clear on the message I am trying to deliver.

The topic that I’ve chosen was American education and the flaws it contains. The main audience for my essay was educators since they are mainly in charge of ensuring the education of students. I would like to educate the educators in charge of our education about the flaws that occur within the American education system. The primary characteristic of my audience is that they are mostly in the adult age range. I want them to understand the problems students are facing within the American education system. The strategy I might use would be using logos by presenting statistical information, having some sort of pathos to make them feel guilty of how they are not doing anything to change the system, and maintaining a formal style of tone. The genres that would make the ideas more accessible would be having visuals because they might be good for the audience which in this case would be the educators since it shows them a bigger picture of what the issue is and gives them a general idea on how to solve certain issues. Furthermore, another genre I can use would be a poster because it would be easier to convey my message about the problems within American education towards educators. Currently, I am planning on having my poster contain bullet points on the flaws of the American education system as well as including some sort of picture that demonstrates those flaws. My next visual genre is leaning towards a meme in which it would be a mockery towards American education but the mockery would be an exaggeration which can bring the educator’s attention since the issue can be serious.

My topic is about the broken windows policing which many people don’t know about, so I’ll seek to inform both the younger generation and the older so they know what type of strategy the police are using in their town. Targeting mainly those using the internet through social media. I merely want to inform my audience and allow them to think about whether or not they want to change the way they are policed or if they are fine with it, either way, they will be able to understand more about what the police are doing. The thing I believe most people will find attracted to and easiest to understand will be pictures, short comics of sorts as well as small fun-facts type of post on social media involving different main ideas of the broken windows policing being shown individually without using tons of text. I also want to use pathos and draw on the audience’s own experiences with the police to allow them to think about how the police are using the broken windows theory in their own town and the effects it has on the audience themselves.

My intended audience consists of adolescents, as well as, adults affected by Social Media. The primary characteristics are teens from 13-20, as well as adults from 20-25. I want my audience to understand the problem that they are facing and the consequences of excessive social media. The audience should feel the wrongness of SM by not feeling guilty for using it. To make such a sentence true, I want to make a meme that is hilarious but also has indirect meaning to it. For instance, I would say, “If I had a dollar for …”, or “Now Vs. Then”. By looking at these memes, my audience would further think about the change they want to make because Social Media does not provide you financially, however it takes your time away to do something productive or fun. I think my rhetorical strategy proposes logos since my genre would appeal to logic or reason. I also want to make sure my audience is not negatively targeted by making another subway advertisement with facts, demonstrations, and visuals. In this case, I will use logos and pathos for my rhetorical strategies. As explained in my potential genre proposal, I want to make a poster as a subway advertisement. The time should be August or September since that is the time of back to school. In the poster, I will provide facts that address the negative impacts of SM. The use of logos will determine the logical argument of excessive social media so that my audience can understand and feel my poster. I will also use ethos to engage with my audience by categorizing beliefs or ideas of social media. For instance, writing a short sentence from a real person that talked about their negative impacts of social media. However,  appealing to emotions will allow the audience to understand the consequences and feel the need to change or slightly decrease their use of the internet.

My intended audience for my essay is the ignorant people in our society, parents, and elderlies. parents play a major role in the recovery of their daughter.  They have to be supportive of their daughter to help them get out of the trauma. Parents will also have to teach their sons. abut these matters from a young age. I want to spread the word all around, so it can reach out to the ignorant people in our society who are still victim-blaming and seeing the fault of the girls. There are still a huge number of populations that do not consider this issue and try to find a solution for it.

I want to create a video that will include different views and opinions people from different background has to about rape. which will give us a better understanding of different perspectives and show us why women are still not safe outside. I also want to include videos of rape survivors sharing their experiences with society.  Making a video has a good chance of getting to a wide range of audiences with the help of social media. Many people repost a video or picture with their opinion and that starts and conversation. It will be beneficial because it will also be seen by the ignorant people, who will get a sense of how the survivors feel.

My intended audience consists of socials workers and the Department of Child Protective Services, as well as, previous foster kids.

By targeting the people in charge, I want to reach people who work with foster kids, who possibly aren’t aware of the situations these kids are placed under and how much of an effect it has on them. Social workers and Child Protective Services would need a more logical approach, in addition to, an emotional approach. If provided with factual information and comparisons, then they can begin to understand the issue that’s living within the system. They’ll be more willing to look further into these situations and possibly make a change to their methods. By appealing to their sense of emotion, it’ll allow them to build a connection with the kids and understand the importance of what’s being addressed. I’ve decided to use a political cartoon to present this matter to my intended audience because it will provide a visual demonstration on how life is for foster kids during and after the foster care system. I want to illustrate how every encounter has influenced both behavior and future success. By applying my ideas onto a political cartoon, I hope to highlight the underlying issues that aren’t investigated, to give the people in charge a reason to take a different approach in the way foster kids are cared for.

As for previous foster kids, especially ones who have been victims to any of the situations presented within the foster care system, ones who’ve felt scared to speak up about the things they underwent, I want to be able to give them a sense of comfort and to not feel alone in that aspect. Advertisements are displayed wherever you look: on the side of a bus, on the train, billboards, on the internet. I want to appeal to their emotions through a subway advertisement. Something that will be seen every single time you decide to take the train. Previous foster kids might view this advertisement and feel safe enough to speak up about their experience, to spark a change in the way the system is run by introducing the things that went wrong while being in the system.

Genre Proposal

For my third essay, I want to write about health care availability in America. I’m excited about this topic because I can finally express my thoughts without incorporating facts or data. For this assignment, I want to explore visual essays, such as political cartoons and memes, that might make my experience while writing more passional. I enjoy memes and political cartoons on social media that carried out a powerful message inside, but I’m a little bit worried about creating one for this assignment. I took inspiration for this topic, considering the entire COVID-19 pandemic and how it has affected low-income Americans who have been infected but could not receive medical attention due to the high cost of health insurance in America. My intended audience would be the U.S government, as it planned for them to open their eyes and see the suffering of the people who can’t afford health because of the high price of medical care in America. Due to the intended audience, a visual cartoon is an appropriate genre for this essay because it will help me share a message through public figures and criticize the government’s actions. My next visual genre would be a meme where I can mock the government’s effort toward a worldwide crisis and how they “help” Americans in need during an economic crisis. The meme would try to show how ironic it is that America is one of the world’s global potency is the country with the worst health care outcomes and the highest prices compared to other high-income countries.

ESSAY #3 AUDIENCE STRATEGY

As I stated in my previous genre proposal, I would like to revisit my original topic of gender inequality. I said that I would want to include for #BlackLivesMatter and gender inequality in my essay, however, I’m still revisiting that idea. I would like to base my essay on overall injustices in America, but I believe that would be too broad of a topic. Instead, I just might go with gender inequality for this essay.

For my paper, I would like my intended audience to be both women and men. Specifically, those who feel as though their voice isn’t enough. In today’s society, it is very easy to believe that nothing you do as an individual can have an impact. Because an issue as big as gender inequality can have such a great impact, it becomes difficult to think that the work we do as a society will make this injustice any better. When reading my essay, I want my audience to feel inspired to know that the words they say or the actions they take can and will eventually make a difference. Because I know that gender inequality make usually be targeted towards women, I want any men who read my essay to know and acknowledge that any action they take is just as important as any action women might take as a whole. I would like men to realize that they would not only be speaking up for the equality of bother genders but for the positive welling being of society as a whole.

For my genre, I have chosen a visual genre. I think for this essay I could use infographics as a way of showing my ideas and getting my information across clearly. Also, I will be drawing on pathos for my essay. I believe as a society we are emotional human beings. It is very easy to relate to someone else’s emotions, and I believe by appealing to my audience’s feelings, I can bring about thoughts on the subject that they didn’t know they had.

Essay #3 Audience Strategy

My topic is continuing with the issue of Marine Pollution and Pollution as a whole. My target audience for this essay will be mostly people under the age of 30, new minds, that are either just becoming real adult members in society or just became members. The reason for this is to get the next generation of people, my generation to break the cycle of ignorance regarding the topic. They are the next politicians, doctors, and scientists. Its time someone took charge to fix the problems with the planet, at least let someone start with that then maybe move onto more humanity-based issues. Before solving other controversial social issues, lets make sure we still have a planet to live on. I am choosing a broad scope and focusing on pollution in general with Marine Pollution being the key to opening the door. My plan is this to use the visual genres of a political cartoon and poster in order to get my point across to have the poster be about marine pollution and the cartoon about pollution as a whole. Start small then think big. Use one issue to open the audience’s eyes to the bigger one. People believe what they see, until they see it, they tend to ignore it as if it does not affect them. So, a political cartoon and or a series of photos may be just the right thing to get people moving and acting on the issue. Which is the whole point I am trying to get across. To get people to Act.
